Selezionato per il RIBA Stirling Prize 2017, il progetto di conservazione e riuso dello studio Baynes e Mitchell Architects dialoga con il linguaggio degli storici cantieri navali di Chatham, in Inghilterra.

Command of the Oceans è un progetto di conservazione e riuso degli storici cantieri navali di Chatham, realizzato dallo studio Baynes e Mitchell Architects e tra gli edifici selezionati per il RIBA Stirling Prize 2017. Il progetto conserva, interpreta e mette in mostra la Namur – una grande nave da guerra del diciottesimo secolo. Il nuovo centro turistico ha lo scopo di raccontare la storia e il ruolo del vecchio cantiere navale, con nuove gallerie e servizi per l’ospitalità.

  Nel cuore del progetto è stato inserito un nuovo edificio lungo e sottile, innesto tra due edifici esistenti che sono stati conservati. L’insieme forma il nuovo ingresso del complesso e collega le diverse aree per l’ospitalità con i nuovi spazi della galleria. La struttura porta anche a una galleria sotterranea per la visione della nave dal basso. Gli edifici adiacenti sono stati conservati e adattati per formare gallerie, ristoranti e spazi commerciali. Il profilo del nuovo edificio si collega a quello delle falde degli edifici adiacenti.

Sono stati utilizzati una ristretta gamma di materiali, principalmente metallo nero, pietra, cemento a vista e legno. Questi sono materiali che entrano in dialogo con il linguaggio industriale degli edifici esistenti e con il paesaggio portuale. I complessi lavori in loco hanno compreso degli scavi archeologici, per rafforzare le fondamenta e le strutture storiche e installare un pavimento temporaneo sospeso dalla struttura originale per proteggere il legno vecchio.
