From the past, but only more significant now… was the subject of the invitation, and we were happy to receive a range of responses and wonderful material; this then resulted in a discussion with each contributor, on which text should we select from the shortlist, or what should be the extract – what would guide the selection, why certain ideas were important to us editorially and to put out in the public sphere, where did we need to jog our memory and not slip into comfortable amnesia – and so on. At times there were really old extracts, where the author was sceptical about its republishing and reception, but we editorially felt it was really important to bring this out of the old shelves. What we talk, when we talk about design is an initiative to outline everything that the word conjures, and to place it within the larger umbrella of ‘design’. We then look at three very important projects in the sphere of education and architecture — Women’s Hostel Building for the College of Engineering, Pune designed by Christopher Charles Benninger Architects, and the Sona College of Technology, Tamil Nadu and Symbiosis Knowledge village, Pune by IMK Architects; all examples making crucial statements on how one understands the role of architectural form in India’s contemporary landscape.
