Con il progetto ‘Oculi’, Austin + Mergold ha vinto l’edizione di quest’anno del The City of Dreams Pavilion, un concorso di architettura per la realizzazione di un padiglione, ospitato dall’evento artistico Figment. Il progetto è stato costruito a Governors Island, dove verrà disinstallato alla fine dell’estate. Dopo la rimozione, questi elementi saranno ricostruiti come complesso residenziale sperimentale nel centro di New York.

I silos metallici, prodotti 40 anni fa, sono stati acquistati da una fattoria in Ohio e sono stati poi decostruiti, dipinti e assemblati in modo da diventare elementi sospesi sopra le teste dei visitatori del padiglione. Le tonalità di blu della vernice sono state scelte per riprodurre i colori del cielo estivo della città di New York. Tali strutture possono essere facilmente trovate nei paesaggi degli Stati Uniti, dove segnalano la presenza delle reti della produzione alimentare ricorrenti nel paese. Come artefatto dell’età agro-industriale americana, Austin + Mergold, insieme all’artista Maria Park, ha considerato questi elementi come spolia contemporanei, a ricordo la storia del secolo scorso; il progetto dell’installazione è stato concepito per rappresentare una nuova connessione tra vita urbana e rurale. Il nome dell'installazione si riferisce al Pantheon di Roma: i silos ricostruiti si aprono verso il cielo e, allo stesso tempo, producono una gamma di ombre sul terreno.
