Refugee facilities designed by Zaha Hadid Architects

Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has created a series of flexible structures similar to tents that will be distributed in various countries around the world, including Syria, Turkey, and Yemen. The project is being created alongside the Education Above All Foundation and Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, which also handled the recent World Cup. According to the engineer Yasi Al Jamal, Director General of the Supreme Committee: “These vital structures will showcase the legacy of the first FIFA World Cup in [the] region. From day one, our goal has been to deliver a tournament that would benefit Qatar, the region and the world”.

“Fifteen tents will be given to IOM [International Organization for Migration], of which ten will serve as schools and five as health clinics in Turkey and Yemen. In Syria […] will receive twelve structures that will serve as shelters for displaced communities”, said ZHA. Three of the shelters are already being used in Pakistan and Turkey, as schools for hundreds of displaced children, and twenty-four more will be delivered in the coming months.

The tents – weather-proof – feature a steel framework, anchored by concrete foundations. With partially translucent sections and skylights, they ensure natural ventilation.They can also be easily moved and reassembled, joined together to create larger shelters, or recycled once they are no longer needed.
