Gallery S O, in London, presents “As Above, So Below”, a solo-exhibition by Scottish artist, metalworker, goldsmith and poet Kathleen Reilly. This is a series of artworks that combine poetic messages and everyday objects with elegant and witty outcomes: subtle juxtapositions where the object takes on a new meaning according to the written message. “Dove egg” can be a famous bar of soap or a real bird egg; a drop of whisky encased in cast acrylic is the last memory of her grandfather; a cream cracker de-bossed with “Life vest under your seat”, what we always see on the plane’s front seat, reminds us of the fragility/friability of human life. A golden knife in balance talks instead about possibilities: it would take so little to make it lean on one side rather than the other. Reilly reinvents the common place in terms of free personal associations or conceptual tricks by using a broad range of technical and industrial processes, including electroforming, stamping and die cutting, with a focus on the power of material and composition.
