MAD architects will be returning to California with Star, a biomorphic office tower in the heart of Hollywood. The proposal shows an unusual shape, integrating tree-filled gardens and terraces throughout its 22 floors. Expected to open in 2026, the Star will be a new iconic landmark along the Sunset Boulevard – eponymously, the street of the stars.
The tower volume is enclosed in a giant glass dome and marked by a superstructure that replicates the silhouette of an egg. The thin band that runs across the sculptural structure serves a practical purpose: it acts both as a funicular track to easily transport visitors to the rooftop restaurant and as space for events, with a 360-degree observation deck. The upper portion will feature a garden as well, providing the top of the structure with a terrarium-like atmosphere.
The project is engineered for the post-covid world, focusing on enhancing the employees' physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Architects have put great emphasis on the importance of light and air quality as well as WELL and LEED certifications.
The landscape design by SALT landscape architects is characterised by a series of hanging gardens and rich vegetation throughout the building, large open spaces and green terraces. The upper part of the building will also contain a garden in which the atmosphere will be similar to that of a greenhouse or terrarium.
