The French interior designer Pierre Yovanovitch, at the invitation of the director Vincent Huguet, signed the scenography of Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi, for the production scheduled from January 21st to June 21st 2023 at Theater Basel, in Switzerland.
Focusing on the universal themes touched by the opera, from Victor Hugo’s play in five acts Le roi s’amuse, as the power, naivety, and revenge, Yovanovitch has developed a moveable design scheme, characterized by its unique aesthetic and able to accommodate the complex psychology evoked by the plot.
On the stage, a central structure – consisting of three sliding walls painted red and blue – is accompanied by two other elements: a white staircase that bends along the background and a sculptural chandelier, that illuminates the space with its concentric and minimal rings.
The walls move along a 360-degree circular track, changing position as the storyline evolves and giving rise to an entirely new background on which the characters are acting. Since we are talking about Yovanovitch, some furniture designed for the occasion could not be missing: including a daybed, a curved sofa, and a cylindrical table accompanied by stools.
