The impressive dream visions of Sun Yuan & Peng Yu at St. Regis in Rome

The hyper-realistic portrait of the mother of one of the two artists hovers at the centre of the room, surrounded by several animals: a surreal post-mortem vision invades the majestic lobby.

The luxurious hotel St. Regis in Rome, restored in 2018, is once again theater of an artistic project curated by Galleria Continua. Until April 26, the majestic lobby of the hotel is invaded by Sun Yuan & Peng Yu’s sculptures: the Chinese artists duo hasn’t gone unnoticed at the last Venice Art Biennale, thanks to Can’t Help myself, the mechanical arm sweeping a red liquid that was relentlessly expanding on the floor.

The exhibition “If I died” at the hotel St. Regis presents an environmental work subverting the perception of space, immersing visitors in a surreal scene. At the center, a human figure fluctuates with half-closed eyes – the portrait of Peng Yu’s mother – surrounded by dozens of animals: a dreamlike representation of herself after death. The LUMEN cocktails & cuisine space is occupied by Teenagers, Teenagers, a series of well-dressed figures whose head is immersed in a big stone that deprives them of any visual and communicative possibility.
