Economics university Bocconi of Milan inaugurated a new campus. Built on the site previously occupied by Centrale del Latte, the former central dairy of Milan, the space occupies 35,000 square meters, and a total of 90,000 square meters of land if the old building is considered. Designed by Japanese studio SANAA by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, the new Bocconi project includes four cylindrical glazed structures partially covered by a semi-transparent mesh, with a reference to the concept of openness of the campus, but not all are accessible yet. The blocks of the university – which has 14,952 students of 99 different nationalities - will be fully accessible from spring 2020. The student residence has already been in operation since August 2018, while the green spaces, which occupy 17,000 square meters, will be open to the public in January along with the multi-purpose sports center, which includes two swimming pools, a fitness area, a sports arena with basketball and volleyball court and an indoor running track. The new campus guarantees energy self-sufficiency on an annual basis and photovoltaic panels are placed on the roofs of the buildings. The inauguration of the new Milanese structure coincided with the opening of the 2019/2020 academic year, which was held in the presence of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, and, among others, the Rector of Bocconi Gianmario Verona and the President of the University Mario Monti.
