Milan's new trams are up and running

In February, the first bidirectional ATM Tramlink made its inaugural journey on the city on line 7 and 3.

Two years after the first test, Atm's new Tramlink trams have started running through the streets of Milan, marking the beginning of a modernisation process for the city's tram network. This initiative aims to increase accessibility from 48% to 70%, contributing to an overall improvement in public transportation.

These bidirectional vehicles, 25 meters long and composed of three interconnected coaches with 66 seats, allow for a change of direction when needed and support the future optimization of the urban network, as the construction of a turning loop will no longer be necessary.

The new Tramlink trams, manufactured by Stadler in Valencia, are also equipped with advanced technologies to enhance energy efficiency, reduce noise pollution, and facilitate boarding thanks to their low-floor design. In addition to a real-time passenger information system, they feature 10 internal surveillance cameras monitored by Atm's security centre.

The total investment for the purchase of 80 new trams, set to enter service between 2025 and 2026, amounts to approximately 190 million euros. This initiative aims to gradually replace older vehicles dating back to the second half of the 20th century, with the exception of 125 Carrelli trams, which will continue to operate, preserving a piece of Milan’s transportation history.
