Fujimoto: forest of light

Sou Fujimoto creates for COS, in the spaces of the former Cinema Arti, a space that is both intimate and open, in which visitors interact with the element most pure: light. #MDW2016

Inside the former Cinema Arti, the Japanese architect has created a rarified space using light, the purest and simplest of materials.

Indispensable to architecture and protagonist in fashion, for Fujimoto light is the construction material for this space with permeable confines. The setting created for the swedish clothing brand COS manages to be both intimate and public at the same time.

The installation features a strong interactive component: 25 ceiling reflectors project light onto the floor that are activated – thanks to sensors set alongside the light source – when the visitor walks into the cone of light.

“Interaction is essential for fashion because the human body and fashion are always interacting. And it’s the same with architecture”, says Sou Fujimoto – “architecture doesn’t move but people interact with space and establish a communication with it. Public space is interesting because it is an open area where different people come together and behave in different ways, like in the Serpentine Pavilion that I created three years ago. I saw people behave freely, take their time – like here, in this intimate public space”.
