Delugan Meissl Associated Architects win the 1st prize for the Geriatric Center Donaustadt in Vienna.
The planning concept for the extension of the Geriatric Donaucity encloses a re-organization of urbanistic
conditions, which increases noticeably the use and quality of the surrounding public spaces.
The solid and
clear outer aspect finds its continuation at the inside of the new building through the constant application of
characteristic materials. The layering of partly mobile wood, glass and textile elements forming surrounding
loggia ranges at the facades was established in favour of a highly cost-optimized energy balance.
The
individual use of these space zones leads to a visible changeability of the façade and imparts a changeable
and alive aspect to the clearly shaped solidium. Variable free spaces consisting of terraces, different
garden zones with outdoor furnishing and paths, follow the leading idea of the architectural concept of
embodying identity to its users. A central and representative access and service centre was created under
consideration of the public traffic means. In his function of the distributor for the new hospital ranges, this
zone represents a links between the privateness of the everyday living of a geriatric centre and the
surrounding city life outside.
