Batek Architekten renovated the space of a former factory in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district. Spread over 240 sqm and intended for a family of five people, Sch52 has been renewed while maintaining the characteristics of the industrial structure – load-bearing beams and pillars, brick walls, the general feeling of openness.
Wooden blocks are placed into the space, “boxes” delimiting the lot and definining private areas: bedrooms, bathrooms and a studio connected by a diagonal hallway recall, with their sloping roof, a small village.
These structures-in-the-structure fit into the industrial space without hiding it and perform multiple, sometimes hidden, functions. Dressing room block-cabin is for instance provided with a slatted upper part serving as a private reading corner.
Wood is flanked by the pink accents of doors, walls and furniture and generates chromatic contrasts with the dark floor.
Multifunctional blocks redefine a former factory in Berlin
Batek Architekten renovates an industrial space by inserting wooden blocks that define private areas and hidden corners, between material contrasts and pink accents.
