VS House is a single-family house built only seven years ago on a corner plot on the outskirts of the city of Ahmedabad. The volume of the house, built around a patio and surrounded on two sides by a garden, remains the original one but is given a new spatial order and is equipped with a new material layout, both inside and outside.
“Instead of adding more elements, focus has been given on the nature of the materials used to finish the insides (..) An emphasis was given on an individual’s visual and tactile journey through the house, where a majority of the focus was on the flooring.”

An internal casing made of local grey stone floors and perfectly levelled lime coated walls where wooden elements stand out, becomes the material scenario of the house, however, declined in rhythm, roughness and different patterns. Linear strips of stone run along the pathways of the house alternating with herringbone motifs in the living room and the large-format glossy pieces in the kitchen, as well as the rough ones inlaid with wood in the bedrooms. In the bathrooms the same gray stone is embellished with coloured stone insertions that create different designs on both the floor and wall. The dining room is instead covered with a darker stone, the same that covers the private living room with large sizes.
The study on the first floor, originally a hallway and service terrace is covered by a curved roof which opens up to the morning light. It is imagined as a nest, an isolated shelter enveloped by a continuous wooden coating, The exteriors are conceived as an extension of the interiors and made with the same materials. A gym designed as an independent pavilion and a wooden terrace with a pool overlook the garden. Another terrace covered with a herringbone pattern of fire bricks becomes a corner dedicated to meditation.
