“We were interested in the idea of displaying each item separately, with its own space, giving more emphasis to the products.” This is how Kengo Kuma & Associates describes its latest interior design for Camper. To exhibit the Spanish brand’s footwear, the studio developed a system of niches made up of ceramic elements similar to Mediterranean roof tiles. The composition is inspired by the Catalan bóveda, a system of brick vaults typical of the region, which was developed in the 18th century as an alternative to wooden beams. The pattern is repeated rhythmically on the walls, creating unusual shelves for shoes.

Although the texture of the walls appears to be articulated, the construction technique is simple and intuitive – in Kuma characteristic style – with dry joints reinforced by metal brackets. “This architectural element is very popular in both Japan and Spain, but it is made in very different ways: in Japan the tiles are enamelled and polished, while in the Mediterranean they are left rough, leaving the nature of the material clearly visible,” says the studio. Creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere, the shop is a very tribute of the region’s architectural tradition.
