A rustic farmhouse built during the 16th century in Villagana, Brescia, has been transformed into a place to taste artisanal beer, pizza and local dishes.
StudioMABB was commissioned to renovate the interiors of part of the building that belonged to a family of nobles – at the time the estate's stable – and to use it as a restaurant.
As the building is bound by the superintendence of artistic and cultural heritage, the architects had to leave the internal layout unchanged and focused on details and internal materiality.
The materials used recall the history of the palace and the territory: the handmade terracotta floors have slight chromatic variations, which testify to the different historical periods in which they were placed; the metal frames of the windows overlooking the garden have been restored; the structure of the ceiling with wooden beams has been preserved, while the walls have a rustic lime-based plaster, which is typical of the local tradition.
"Ganea is the ancient name of Villagana, which in Latin meant tavern, hostelry, inn, a place of refuge for travelers and merchants,” say the Milanese architects on the name of their project.
Their interior design links the centuries-old history of the farmhouse and renews it with respect and a contemporary taste.
