San Diego. A cantilevered house built on the canyon

The subtle work of adaptation of the wooden volumes of the Redwood house to the canyon running through the city of San Diego carried out by Jeff Svitak resulted in a sense of intimacy that the Redwood house emanates.

The house is accessed across a floating steel bridge facing the street. The axis defined by this bridge recurs in the interiors as it divides the two main volumes of which the Redwood house is composed. The entrance is characterised by a sliding cedar door and, once the visitor accesses in the interior space, their sight is immediately captured by the open space overlooking the canyon and vegetation present on the other side of the house. The living areas are located on this floor, while the bedrooms are on the upper floor; the basement is an open space used as a studio. The adaptation of the house to the site is enhanced by a system of passages and terraces, culminating with living room, cantilevered on the canyon.
