The exhibition at the architecture museum in Helsinki offers the opportunity – probably unique in its kind – to get to know some of the hundreds of unbuilt projects by Alvar Aalto. And to try and imagine how parts of our cities would be if things had happened differently.
Thanks to three dimensional and virtual reconstructions of many of the sketches and drawings, visitors have the chance to understand the work and design process of the architect and to experience the buildings almost as if they were real.
Some interesting projects go to make up the exhibition, such as the Memorial for the Dominican Republic, designed between 1928 and 1929 or the plan for ‘Patrizia’ (1966), a satellite city outside Pavia. Large scale projects are also included, such as the plan for the centre of Montreal (1963), the design for the art museum in Iran (1969-73) or another art gallery in Tallin, Estonia (1937) and a sports and conference centre in Vienna (1952-56).
