Danish mobility startup Mate is launching its first electric cargo bike. It’s called “Mate SUV” and comes with a mission: convincing as many people as possible that bikes can be a viable alternative to cars in urban environments, even for large families.
Coming in September 2023, Mate SUV will be built in Italy and won’t be cheap. The entry-level model starts at €6,499 and ships with a standard 250W motor with a 25 Km/h top speed and up to 100km of range.
The motor is an Italian-made Oli Edge that can exert up to 90nM of torque, with should be enough to accommodate a rider and its 210L cargo.
Hydraulic twin disc brakes, a carbon belt drive, and an Enviolo Heavy Duty Hub all contribute to the top-quality feeling of the bike.
While Mate SUV will require a hefty investment, it’s worth noticing that the price is still way lower than what a family would have to fork out to own and drive a car, especially in European cities.
