One hundred years. In 1924, Giacomo Matteotti, a free and courageous voice, fell victim to the blind violence of fascism. From 14 November to 29 December, Palazzo Moriggia will be hosting an exhibition dedicated entirely to the memory of a fascinating and courageous historical figure. Matteotti, a journalist who denounced the obscure machinations of power from the pages of the newspaper “Avanti!” and a politician who fought for justice armed with the power of words and of moral integrity. A man who had travelled Milan, who had breathed the energy in the air, and who had shared hopes and fears.

The halls of the Museo del Risorgimento will be playing host to an exhibition that examines this bond, revealing its less well-known and more intimate aspects. Documents, photographs, letters and first-hand accounts paint a portrait of a complex and fascinating figure, an intellectual who was able to combine political action with theoretical thought, and a passion for social justice with a love of culture. The exhibition goes beyond reconstructing the biography of Matteotti, also examining the historical and cultural context in which he worked. In the first decades of the Twentieth century, Milan was a hub of ideas and movements, a workshop for political and social experimentation. Matteotti played an active role, helping to shape political debate with his articles in newspapers and his public speeches.
However, the exhibition also addresses his sentimental side, his relationships and his private life. The letters to Anna Kuliscioff and Filippo Turati, Matteotti’s friends and comrades, paints a more intimate picture of his affections, his doubts and his hopes. “Matteotti and Milan”, one hundred years on, the legacy of Matteotti lives on.
