Elon Musk’s Loop debuts in L.A.

The test tunnel of the project presented as the high-speed urban transportation of the future, has been unveiled. And it’s a bit disappointing.

Dugout Loop, not to be confused with the Hyperloop, is the project of an hyper fast, zero-emissions underground transportation, proposed by Elon Musk’s Boring Company, that’s meant solve part of Los Angeles traffic problem, connecting the Dodger Stadium to a western terminus in the neighborhoods of Los Feliz or Rampart Village, located near a metro station. Autonomous electric skates will transport 8/16 passengers each, as is stated on the company’s website, traveling at a maximum speed of 150 miles per hour. At least, according to the plan, which was showcased with a series of impressive concept videos.

Now that the Loop’s test tunnel in Hawthorne, California has been unveiled, there’s a huge disappointment among the first reviewers, who were invited on a Tesla Model X to visit it, and report that it was “like riding on a dirt road” (Laura J. Nelson, The Los Angeles Times). And from what Matt Novak reports on Gizmodo, who quotes Musk’s statements to AP, the project now is that of subterranean highway, and not a futuristic subway, with private cars using it instead of the public shuttles that everybody was expecting.
