The mixed reality artwork that makes you live like a Singaporean

Reflections of Little Red Dot by Chloé Lee is a digital foray into the Asian city-state, a unique place of living. At the last SXSW it was awarded with the Jury Prize.

Artist Chloé Lee's inventive and creative tech urban expedition, Reflections of Little Red Dot, inserts the viewer in the lives and experiences of the residents of various neighborhoods in Singapore. Lee's augmented reality experience employs a vivid interplay of film archival material, interviews, hand drawings, and AI generated images.

The artist considers her work as a portal for remembering and reimagining personal and collective memory through space and architecture.

"I wanted to create a way for people to get to know a place slowly, planting a person between time and space, "Lee told Domus.

Once donning the virtual reality system, viewers can grab and insert physical slides into a real projector. When a slide is in play, they experience a guided, multifaceted wander through an area of Singapore. Each slide contains a specific locale enriched by fragments of voices, walking tours, and descriptions from residents about the tapestry of people and histories enlivening the neighborhood's spirit.

Lee's intimate journeys explore urban development and its repercussions on the well-being and cultural heritage of six Singaporean neighborhoods within the themes of nature preserves, food culture, multiculturalism, and nationalistic success while highlighting intergenerational connections. The viewer is embedded in specific locations, enveloped within the discourse and disconnection Singaporeans feel about the erasure of their histories, spaces, and community interaction.

Archived videos of each location run on a loop, so the viewer is always in control. They can enter and stay in each storyline at any point, free to leave and return.

Reflections of Little Red Dot (LRD), has captivated audiences and earned the Jury Award in the XR Experience category at this year's SXSW. The festival, which takes place every year in Austin, Texas, celebrates the convergence of technology, media, film, and music.
