A new skyscraper in Chicago: one of Helmut Jahn’s last projects completed

Among the tallest residential buildings in the Windy City, 1000M dialogues in various ways with the surrounding historic buildings: it is one of the last works of the architect who died in 2021.

The architecture studio Jahn has completed in Chicago one of the last projects by the studio’s founder, Helmut Jahn, who passed away in 2021 and was famous for designing the Thompson Center, recently purchased by Google, which will renovate it. The skyscraper, named 1000M, at 788 feet (223 meters) tall, is one of the tallest residential skyscrapers in the city and is located at the south end of the Michigan Avenue Historic District, near the city’s lakefront.

The base is clad with dark-colored aluminum panels that reference the surrounding historic buildings, while the top is slightly set back and more glossy, integrating into the skyline. The skyscraper has a slight slope to the south, and its facades were curved in places, adding movement. Additionally, a “diagonal seam” runs along the north and south facades of the skyscraper, emphasizing the tower’s slight taper.
