The major expansion project of the MAXXI begins to take shape

Managed by an interdisciplinary group led by the Italian-French firm LAN, alongside SCAPE Architecture, SNA, Bollinger + Grohmann Ingegneria, Franck Boutté Consultants, Bureau Bas Smets, and Folia Consulenze, the expansion project of the National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome – dubbed Grande MAXXI and financed by resources allocated by the Ministry of Culture, Minster of Infrastructure and Transport, and with PNRR funds – is being developed along three lines of action: MAXXI Hub + Green, MAXXI Sustainable, MAXXI for All. It aims to be sustainable, accessible, and functional, regenerating the Flaminio neighborhood in Rome.

Next year the new large urban linear park of 7,200 sqm along Via Masaccio is expected to be inaugurated. It will host educational gardens, botany workshops, and guided tours. The new building, the MAXXI Hub, expected to be completed in 2027, will echo the volumes and proportions of the surrounding urban texture. It will be developed over three floors with a large central void and a rooftop garden. It will house classrooms, high-tech laboratories for contemporary restoration, visitable storage for art, architecture, design, and photography, and two underground parking areas.
