The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the internationally recognised professional body promoting excellence from around the world, has announced the 22 winners of the RIBA International Awards for Excellence 2024. "The International Awards recognise and celebrate ambitious and impactful buildings across the world that create meaningful change. It is a privilege for us to reward this collection of the world’s most exceptional buildings” says Muyiwa Oki, President of RIBA.
The topics that guided the selection raise the central questions of contemporary and future design, such as climate resilience and connection to nature, as in the project by K-Studio in Greece, which celebrates an ancient vineyard with a semi-hypogean intervention that embraces the irregular typography of the land.
Creative reinvention and extension of existing architecture is the second evaluation parameter that led to the award to David Chipperfield Architects, headed by the guest editor of Domus 2020 and Pritzker Prize 2023, with the renovation of the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, designed by Mies van der Rohe.
Finally, the focus on wellness can be seen in community projects such as the Sharanam Centre for Rural Development in a region of eastern India, designed by Jateen Lad, which uses a modest budget and community commitment to create an oasis of dignity and well-being.
