Not only the site on which Manhattan West is located but the entire neighborhood, from Penn Station on 7th Avenue to Hudson Yards on the river, was something of a wasteland until about twenty years ago, a true urban void in the middle of the city. Today, it has become a vibrant part of New York. This high-density project now encompasses six buildings—four designed by SOM and all but one engineered by SOM— bringing two acres of public space, offices, residential units, hospitality, and retail spaces.
