Constructed as a part of the Hudson Yards complex, in Midtown Manhattan, the 78-story skyscraper, called “50 Hudson Yards” and designed by Uk studio Foster + Partners, contains three million square feet of office space, including the ones of the tech giant Meta and of BlackRock, the world's biggest investment company.
The 1,011-foot-tall building serves as a gateway to the complex, occupying a full block between 34th Street and 33rd Street on the east side of the site. With a stepped envelope and a symmetrical facade with floor-to-ceiling glass and structural elements at the podium and in vertical strips cladded in Viscount White stone, the project – according to Foster + Partners – aims to respect the “wider context of the New York street grid”.
At the top of the tower, the designer Jamie Carpenter created an installation that catches daylight and then illuminates the building at nighttime; while Frank Stella designed sculptural works for the public lobby.
