The Japanese firm Kuma and Associates designed its first residential tower in the United States: Aman Miami Beach Residences. On the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, the 18-story building, with its colors and its light structure, blends perfectly with the coastal aesthetic. Apparently dissonant elements – such as the tall columns that support the base of the condominium – fit into the otherwise harmonic and neutral project, as in a jazz piece, Kengo Kuma emphasized.

The columns are one of the most attractive features of the building and take up in a modern key the idea of the stilt house, widespread in the communities near the beach. This design choice was developed to meet the demands of the residents of the surrounding buildings. “As is often the case in projects with great views on all sides, neighbors requested to preserve their views of the coast,” Kuma explains, adding that to appease the surrounding tenants was raised also the lobby’s ceiling, where residents are greeted by a parametric wave made from custom wood latticework.
