The chosen place is located in the innermost part of the district and is a “periphery of the periphery”: an area of about 300 square meters, which – in addition to the entrance to the Fontanelle – includes the churchyard of the parish of Maria Santissima del Carmine and a small green space, made available to the public by privates.
The aim is to give dignity to the ossuary entrance, now covered by a roof of metal sheet, and to connect the churchyard with the two contiguous areas: the entrance to the Fontanelle cemetery and the garden. According to the request made by Renzo Piano, the place will become a square.
The project works will be financially supported by private sponsors and are expected to be completed in less than two years. The designs will be presented in October at the Pisa Architecture Biennale. The first meeting with the residents and the various neighborhood associations is scheduled for May 29 in the Maria Santissima del Carmine church.
