El Terreno neighborhood and its Plaza Gomila, in Palma de Mallorca, from the 1950s to the 1980s, were a cultural hub and the centre of Mallorca’s avant-garde nightlife, but after then the area has been neglected. A series of plots in Plaza Gomila will then be redeveloped through a public-private venture, with the aim of restoring the atmosphere of the bohemian district.
MVRDV, in collaboration with Spanish studio GRAS Reynés Arquitectos, will bring new life to the neighborhood with a project that will renovate four existing buildings and add three new ones, each in a different colour and material, in order to revive the area and restore its vibrant atmosphere, creating a sense of community, “a Gomila belonging”, as Guillermo Reynés said.
The project adds 60 new residential units to the neighbourhood and various amenities, like bars and restaurants, pools and commercial spaces. The masterplan’s first phase is already unfolding, with five of the planned buildings under construction.
