Elevating from a raised base, the stadium for the men’s hockey competitions of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, designed by David Chipperfield, will be composed by three rings at different heights, connected to each other and joined to the floor by transparent glass bands, giving in this way the effect of floating on each other.

The stadium – which can accommodate up to 16 thousand people and whose energy consumption will be minimized thanks to photovoltaic panels – will overlook a new 10 thousand square meter plaza in the Santa Giulia district, designed to host events, as well the district life. The interiors of the structure, in the same way, are developed “to host not only hockey competitions, but also concerts, handball competitions, gymnastics and basketball”, said Rainer Appel, executive vice president of Cts Eventim, the company that deals the construction and management of the stadium. “It will be a legacy for Milan and Lombardia, because after the Games it will continue to remain the most important structure in Italy for events (of this type)”.
The construction works of the stadium should begin by the end of this year and, hopefully, finish by the autumn of 2025. In reality, however, there are two appeals to the TAR still pending on this path, about which the mayor of Milan, Beppe Sala, declared: “We are waiting for June (the month in which the hearing at the Administrative Court was set) to understand what will happen, we are confident in the law and in our good work. No suspension has been called and we proceed as if nothing had happened, we are positive”.
