Together with Republic of Gamers, Asus’ gaming brand, Ikea has created a new collection aimed at gamers on a budget. The Swedish brand launched the new range of 30 products in China at the beginning of 2021, and it’s now ready to expand its availability worldwide. The new lineup is divided across five main families: Huvudspelare, Utespelare, Matchspel, Lånespelare, and Uppspel. The range includes desks and chairs at different price points to accommodate all budgets, along with special drawer units, a wall-mounted pegboard for gaming peripherals, a neck pillow, a mouse cable holder, and even a wooden hand that’s a headphones stand.
”The needs of billions of gamers around the globe are very diverse, whereas the existing offer is rather technical and often perceived as masculine design-wise, despite around 46 per cent of gamers being female,” says Ewa Rychert, Ikea’s global business leader of workspace. This inclusive approach is what makes Ikea’s new lineup interesting, even beyond the gaming market. By avoiding fancy RGB LEDs and branding choices often aimed at a prevalently male audience, these new product families cater to everyone who needs to sit for a long time at a desk. That includes gamers, of course, but also many digital workers that have discovered the joys and (back)pains of pandemic-induced remote working.
