Chinese automaker Great Wall took on the duty of creating an electric version of a Volkswagen Beetle. It's called "Punk Cat", and the company will sell it under the Ora brand, its EV subsidiary. Copycat could have been a better moniker, though, considering Volkswagen has absolutely nothing to do with the new vehicle, despite the unmistakable resemblance with the German carmaker's late Beetle models. For some reason, Great Wall thought it was acceptable to take the classic German design and turn it into a new car with a vintage flair. The Chinese manufacturer plans to release the Punk Cat at the end of the year but so far hasn't shared any specs or details about price. We know for sure that, at least initially, Great Wall plans to offer the new car only to Chinese customers. That still won't be enough to shield the company from Volkswagen's legal intervention. With 3,14 million vehicles sold in Mainland China and Hong Kong in 2020 through its Chinese subsidiary, the German carmaker is currently the largest brand in China by sales. A strong position that definitely won't be ignored by Beijing's trademark authorities.
