South Korean artist Koo Jeong A designed OooOoO, a multi-sensory skatepark that is now on show at Triennale Milano. The site-specific installation – placed on the groundfloor of the building – can be experienced by visitors until 16 February 2020. The artist is used to work with participatory installations since 1990s: one of Koo’s last creations is OTRO (2012), made in collaboration with L’Escault Architectures and built on the island of Vassivière in France.
The Triennale installation is part of the PLAY! project, dedicated to the issue of play and curated by Julia Peyton-Jones with Lorenza Baroncelli. A topic already discussed in the museum during the X Triennale Milano with Labirinto dei Ragazzi by BBPR, that was a reflection on the educational and cultural dimension of playing. In 1964, XIII Triennale Milano was dedicated to the issue of Tempo Libero (free time) and to the importance that free time had in the society. This year, Triennale wants to explore the play as an essential component of geopolitics and culture.
OooOoO involves people offering electronic music by Koreless, a Glasgow-based producer. Covered with a fluorescent paint, the installation shines in the dark creating an immersive environment. What Koo Jeong A wants to explore is the relationship between man and object, the individual and the community, inviting people to be part of the skatepark through a physical and mental experience. During the exhibition, the design museum has also organized an academy for children with skate sessions, the Academy of Skateboarding featuring bastard.
