The new TH40 from Epomaker is a mechanical keyboard that is only 40% of the normal size, so small and lightweight compared to usual that it is considered “pocketable,” so much so that it comes with a strap for easier transport, and in social media videos, it can be seen being slipped into the pocket of a tracksuit. But it is a solid object, made of sturdy ABS plastic and with a carefully designed gasket-mounted key system.
The keyboard connects to computers, tablets, and smartphones via Bluetooth, USB cable, or 2.4G wireless. Inside, it has a 3000mAh battery that ensures long autonomy.
The comeback of mechanical keyboards
Mechanical keyboards, a “retro technology” that in offices and on laptops has been replaced by thinner keyboards, have made a comeback in recent years. Certainly, the context in which they are most successful is gaming, but they are also used by programmers, creators, and writers. In addition to offering a better typing experience and higher responsiveness, as well as great durability, what distinguishes them is the possibility of customization.
The Epomaker TH40, besides being solid and particularly functional despite its small size, is objectively beautiful. It is sold in two versions: black and gold, with yellow details on a black body, and purple, where the violet color alternates with white. When the keyboard is turned on, a sophisticated backlighting system colors it; this is not only an aesthetic addition but also functional. For example, the battery level is indicated precisely through the backlighting. There is no official carrying case, and when transporting it, some care is obviously needed.

Typing and customization
When tested, typing on the TH40 is simply delightful. At the same time, it feels special: to create such a small keyboard, Epomaker has given up many keys we are used to, such as the number row and function keys, as well as the arrow keys and the entire section of the keyboard with special and accented characters for alphabets that use them. It is certainly not a keyboard for everyone, and learning to use it well definitely requires a significant learning curve.
The TH40 uses a very popular keyboard customization software called VIA, which allows configuring 4 “layers” of different characters and functions to the few available keys. Macros can also be set, significantly expanding the possibilities of this keyboard, which is so beautiful but so small. VIA is a fairly intuitive software, but not very simple, and it is easy to make mistakes that are then difficult to undo, as it effectively changes the keyboard’s key mapping, so it should be used with caution.

Is it worth it?
The Epomaker TH40 is a keyboard that combines portability, solidity, and customization possibilities, but it is not for everyone. Its ultra-compact format makes it an ideal choice for those who love minimalist and customizable keyboards, while it might be challenging for those who prefer a more traditional layout. If you are willing to overcome the initial learning curve, this keyboard can become a truly special typing companion.
