The Recycling Plastic Range project was born from the discovery of a Belgian company specialized in the manufacture of planks and logs made with granulate of recycled plastic. Blended with coloring, this composition is melted into a homogenous mass under high temperature and sprayed into moulds.
A standard plank measures 3.6m, and can be recycled over and over after use. While company uses this material for terraces, cabins and outdoor or urban furniture, French-born, Brussels-based designer Julien Renault became interested in the qualities of the material. This particular type of recycled plastic is robust and heavy; it can be worked like solid wood and it is waterproof.
With Recycling Plastic Range, Renault creates a furniture range for outdoor and indoor. The collection is simple, inspired by solid wood basic construction, and iincludes a low chair, a table and a very low bench. The low proportions of the range put the user close to the ground.
By experimenting with various production technologies and a statement of handwork, Julien Renault seeks to redefine both the material and technique of everyday products and furniture.
His breakthrough happened at the 2010 D3 Contest at IMM Cologne with his 'Hand Forged Aluminum Series', his bachelor project, which addressed the relationship between commercial production standards and near craft methodologies. Renault seeks to produce affordable, production-efficient products.
