It’s got its socks rolled down. The charming glasses
designed by Anu Penttinen for Marimekko are the
latest members of the In Good Company tableware
family. The relaxed, direct, in character, indirect-
looking shape of the glasses, combined with
Marimekko’s characteristic multicolour, take a
stance against formalised thinking. Like a person
with his or her socks rolled down, Penttinen’s
glasses are natural and liberated, self-assured
individuals.
The unique aesthetics of the Socks rolled down
glasses is multidimensional: on the one hand they
reflect Marimekko’s expressive panoply of patterns,
and on the other, in all their colourfulness, they
emphasise the fine movement characteristic of
their material – freedom. The parts of the Socks
Rolled Down glasses set are defined to suit an
uncomplicated lifestyle. Their approachable essence
beckons one to enjoy moments at the table in
company, a tumbler in hand, on weekdays as well
as special occasions. The set is comprised of
tumblers, stem glasses, and a jug.
With this glassware set Marimekko aims to
encourage the use of tap water instead of bottled
water, with its large carbon footprint, at least in
countries where tap water is good to drink. Water
is Adam’s ale.
Anu Penttinen is a glass designer and a graduate of
University of Arts and Design. She has a glass
studio of her own in Nuutajärvi Glass Village.
Penttinen is inspired by the phenomena and details
of urban life. Her design is predicated on graphical
clarity and strong colours – a perfect fit with
Marimekko’s design philosophy.
