Dutch-born designer Tord Boontje, has created
6 curtains and 3 upholstery fabrics for his new
collection for Kvadrat.
For this collection, the second he has designed for
the company, Tord Boontje wanted to focus more
on surface and textural patterns, rather than the
large patterns that characterised its predecessor.
Conceptually, the collection has its roots in an
abstract interpretation of the natural world: water,
sky, stones, clouds, bark, earth, tree rings and
flowers all make an appearance, either as colours
or motifs. Many of the new tones are drawn from
twilight and the night. The natural, toned-down colours
complement each other and, as a result, the different
elements of the collection work well together.
Initially, Tord Boontje sketches his designs by
hand. This gives them a uniquely individual and
unpredictable feel. Thereafter, they are applied to
fabrics with the latest digital printing, laser-cutting
and burn-out techniques.
There is intriguing tension between opposites in
Tord Boontje’s work and this can be seen across
the new collection. For instance, he has combined
soft and sharp shapes and juxtaposed shiny surfaces
against matt ones.
Ultimately, this new collection, which is suitable for
private homes and the contract market, is elegant,
full of character and versatile.
