Ahmedabad. A single-family house with a central, inner court

HS House is organized around a void created by Studio Saransh to improve ventilation and light: interiors are defined by a mini garden, a skylight and dark patterns.

Designed by Saransh architecture studio, HS House is located between two buildings in the centre of Ahmedabad, India. The context largely influenced the layout of the family house, that could initially only receive the necessary light and ventilation from the two short perimetral sides: the studio therefore created a central, inner court around which the entire building is developed.

This central void includes a mini garden on the ground floor and a glazed volume serving as a skylight on the top floor that is also a wind catcher. The house is made of separate, staggered levels, connected by a metal staircase: the rooms – living, kitchen and bedrooms – are at different heights and some of them are provided with terraces and outdoor spaces.

Interiors on the first level are wrapped in dark concrete cladding made from a cast of wooden strips, but HS House also plays with with Kota stone on the floor and metallic and wooden inserts on the staircase and doors.
