Cheriff, a historic fish restaurant in Barceloneta, Barcelona, has been recently restored by architecture and design firm Mesura. Wondering how a symbol of the city could be redesigned to create a timeless place, architects wanted to reach out to the community through recognizable elements, simplicity and research – the division into compact areas typical of fish shops is an example. The arched shape is used on the floor and ceiling to create, through the use of colour, a visual division of space: the white central area, covered with reddish wood used in the original restaurant, is intercepted by two navy blue areas hosting the tables and a bar. Inspired by the sea, blue is used in various materials and textures – including the painted columns in the centre of the room – and is used as a unifying element. Great focus is on artisanry, emerging in the reinterpretation of the terrazzo on the floor created with white tiles.
