Spontaneous and collective: that’s the spirit the Fuori Salone (meaning “outside the Salone”) was born with. It doesn’t have a founder, a forefather, or an institution which fostered it. The Fuori Salone came to life by itself, starting from the 1980s, thanks to the initiative of a few subjects who, during the week of the Salone del Mobile, began to bring design culture outside of the expo spaces, involving the whole city in a series of unique performances, exhibitions and installations.
However, the Fuori Salone can count on an official year of foundation: 1990. When it was decided for the Salone to move from September to April of the following year, Interni magazine – under the editorial guidance of Gilda Bojardi – decided to fill this void by bringing together a series of events involving galleries, showrooms and furniture shops. They became the first nucleus of the Fuori Salone. The event – always channeling innovation, research and experimentation – has since been growing, becoming one big urban party for an international audience, a spectacular and cultural happening not only catered for the industry’s insiders but able to bring the entire city to life.
