In Sintra, a UNESCO heritage town since 1995, the architecture studio Pereira Miguel Arquitectos renovated a small old two-storey building in a state of ruin, mantaining only the facades and an external independent access to the upper floor. The project sought a continuity solution that kept the charm of the local architecture while making changes compatible with contemporary living needs. The house was divided in two dwellings and the attic used for housing purposes, increasing the height at the middle but maintaining the edge. Materials, colors and external coatings are a tribute to Portuguese architecture and in particular Sintra’s one, famous for its Pena Palace’s bright colors. White, light and wood parquet make this house the perfect "casa portuguesa" sung by Amàlia Rodrigues, here revisited – not too much – in a modern way.
