“Plastic has a design defect: it lasts forever, but often we only use it once and then throw it away” say Panos Sakkas and Foteini Setaki, founders of The New Raw to introduce the genesis of their latest project Zero Waste Lab.

After a first minor experiment presented in Amsterdam, this year in Thessaloniki, Greece – their homeland –, The New Raw provided the community with a robotic arm capable of transforming plastic waste into custom-made street furniture. Through Zero Waste Lab, every citizen can learn about the process of recycling plastic, read the circular economy and design new pieces of furniture for their neighborhoods. It is a project that looks at the local and at the same time at the global. Together with other initiatives, Zero Waste Lab is part of a broader, long-term project: Print Your City, where the two Dutch-based designers move to experiment with all possible alternatives for using plastic in long-lasting, high-value applications.
