“Unlike a cute feminine image, I think that I could represent a strong and beautiful woman who is challenging the future.” Architect Satoshi Takijiri used shades of green and concrete-gray, the complementary colors of pink, to create an unusual girls’ toilet in the St. Catherine high school in Kyoto. Marked by geometric shapes and graphic signage, the renovation of the toilets stops short of the ceiling, with tiles covering a band of the wall reaching just 2.3 meters high. Above that the space is left unfinished, revealing the original framework and plumbing. Two mint green central basins define the bathroom’s foyer, which is visually connected to the common corridor, and sit under two red-framed mirrors that hang from the ceiling, giving the space an industrial character, unexpected in such environment.
