To mark their 125th anniversary – and 70 years of production for the famous undulating Savoy vase designed by Alvar Aalto in 1936 – Iittala is holding a major retrospective on the architecture and design by the Finnish architect. At the Iittala Glass Centre, alongside the more famous projects, a number of lesser known works by the master of Scandinavian functionalism will be on show: private residences, some never built such as the house for his brother Alajärvi (1925), Villa Harriet designed for the daughter of Maire and Harry Gullichsen (1946) and Villa Sambonet, house-studio for the artist Roberto Sambonet (1955). The exhibition design has been designed by Aleksi Perälä and realised in collaboration with the Alvar Aalto Museum, Iittala and the town council of Kalvola.

Meanwhile at the Design Museum in Helsinki, precious glassware by Iittala is on show (until 10 September), forms invented by some of the major designers in the Scandinavian tradition: Timo Sarpaneva, Tapio Wirkkala, and Kaj Franck, as well as of course Alvar and Aino Aalto, and more recently Harri Koskinen, Annaleena Hakatie and Alfredo Häberli.
