What items are essential for the male wardrobe? Jacket, scarf, glove and a thinking head replied Alessandro Mendini with irony in 1997 with the design of four objects in gold mosaic which launched the series, “Mobili da uomo” (Furniture for man), designed for the “Collezione Bisazza”.
Five years on, a lamp and cup are now being added to the evocative “collection”. Two large sculptures, over two metres high in gold mosaic and two pieces which this time arise from the designer’s thoughts about the home. “The home is a refuge”, explains Mendini “but that doesn’t mean it should be transformed into a static system, passive and just reassuring. It is also the stage for the play of our private life. It is representation”.
Tonight at 19h at Bisazza’s Milan showroom in via Senato 2, the designer himself will present the new pieces which will then remain on show until 26 October in the theatrical surroundings designed by Bisazza’s art director Fabio Novembre with the help of artist Sandro Chia, creator of the mural in mosaic. The “Nuovi mobili da uomo” make up part of the larger “Collezione Bisazza”, a project begun in 1994 and curated by Mendini (art director at the time) which represents the most recent artistic directions of the Venetian company, who for many years has invited architects (such as Michael Graves), designers ((Aldo Cibic, Javier Mariscal, George Sowden, Oscar Tusquets, Maria Christina Hamel) and artists (Mimmo Rotella, Emilio Tadini, Riccardo Dalisi) to work with glass mosaic.
