At the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome an exhibition has opened entitled “Afghanistan fermo immagine”: a portrait from 1980 up until the present which tells the tormented story of the country seen across the camera lens of some of the biggest news agencies in the world. Seventy colour images with the last of them taken as recently as 10 December on the entry of the Northern Alliance into Kandahar.

Some of the more well known photographers include Steve McCurry, who has worked for Magnum and National Geographic and Italian Riccardo Venturi, who has made a number of journeys to Afghanistan – as well as the photographer hidden behind a burqa in December 2000 who works under the pseudonym Arthur Fox for fear of retaliation from the Taliban regime.

Until 7 January 2002
