Often having to reconcile small budgets and big ambitions, cultural associations are a precious resource for young artists on the fringes of the contemporary art scene. But they do have a physiological handicap: poor visibility. “inContemporanea”, a project promoted by the Milan Provincial Council and curated by Gabi Scardi, attempts to fill the gap. This year into its fourth edition, for three days, from 8 to 10 May, it frees up space at the Triennale for twelve nonprofit Milan-based associations. aMAZElab, AR.RI.VI, Assab One, Careof, Connecting Cultures, FreeUndo, Isola Art Center, O’, Reporting System, Viafarini, Wurmkos, alongside the Uovo festival of contemporary dance, present their experimental work and attempt to “reveal underground Milan”, in other words what is seen, lived and interpreted by the artists who poetically describe areas of the city. Pierluigi Calignano, Alessandra Spranzi and Enzo Umbaca, for example, offer a poetic interpretation of Via Padova, one of the most multiethnic roads in the Lombardy capital. Meanwhile, Christina Kubisch extends an invitation to discover the city in an unusual way with her electric walks, using sophisticated headsets that can pick up and amplify the sound of electric currents above and below ground. Finally, Wurmkos presents the results of their “clandestine” Wurmkosparole workshops, which combined poetry and images to involve the schools and streets of Sesto San Giovanni. These projects are accompanied by conferences, workshops, mini-plays and screenings. Elena Sommariva
