Dan Flavin’s rooms of light in Varese
Around twenty sculptures made out of light (from fluorescent tubes in five basic colours) flood the galleries with a sense of spirituality and mysticism, greeting visitors to the first major Italian exhibition to be dedicated to Dan Flavin, set up in the stables and out buildings at Villa Panza di Biumo (Varese). A homage to the father of American minimalism who died prematurely in 1996, coinciding also with an extensive retrospective being held at the National Gallery in Washington.
The exhibition also offers a rare chance to admire all together, work from different locations; seven of the light sculptures have come from the Guggenheim in New York, twelve are permanent (designed and realised specially for the villa, such as Varese Corridor), plus a piece from the Panza family’s private collection.
The exhibition has been organised by Fai who in 2000, opened up to the public, architecture donated by Count Panza di Biumo, in collaboration with the Guggenheim. It has been curated by Angela Vettese together with Giuseppe Panza di Biumo and Laura Mattioli Rossi. E.S.
