Equipo de Arquitectura, a Paraguayan firm based in Asunción, continues its research on the private house, between recovery of traditional construction techniques and design of the spaces for a resolutely contemporary domestic life.
The Intermediate House is an essay on the use of rammed earth bricks, which are combined here with structural elements in concrete and steel, but are the undisputed protagonists for the vertical walls, either solid or latticework surfaces, and for the system of roof vaults.
In plan, the house is conceived as a single elongated surface, defined by its deep parcel's perimeter walls. Rather than enclosed rooms, hybrid, mildly delimited, spaces are outlined, which are in fact “intermediate”. Their sequence, also including two open air patios, is made visible by loose opening thresholds, either glass or wooden walls.
Light and air freely pervade this unobstructed open space, enclosed within the service blocks – wardrobes on the one side and kitchen, laundry and bathroom on the other side – which correspond to the building’s main structure, with an explicit reference to the similar solutions adopted by Louis Kahn.
